HISTORY OF DENMARK

Starts 9th October, 12.30-2.30pm

Description

Danes are not introverted, sullen Vikings, obsessed with healthy food and black clothes. Or are they? From mainland Jutland to its largest island of Zealand, Denmark overlaps both Scandinavia and Germany but also has a unique history of happiness, stunning islands, Lego bricks, pastries, bicycles and amusement parks.  In this course we explore this nation, from ancient glacial times, through Romans and Vikings, via dominating its neighbours in war and trade, to collapse and reunification, up to modern wars, aesthetic, liberal culture and traditions (first country to recognize same-sex couples).Michael Couch has been teaching community education courses for over a decade. With an academic background in Philosophy, Classical Studies, Education and History, he recently completed his PhD in the History of Philosophy of Education in New Zealand. He enjoys learning new topics, and incorporates passion and wry humour into all the courses he teaches.
